And the current king of these sets is the LEGO CITY Fire Station 60110.
When I was 6 (this would have been the late 1970s), I discovered the TV show Emergency!. This was a TV show created by the same team behind the classic TV show Dragnet. It used real-life stories from the LA Fire Department to inspire dramatic stories of Engine Station 51. Including the first paramedic unit in California (possibly the country).
For years I pretended to be a firefighter.
And thus once I got back into LEGO, I knew I wanted a LEGO fire set. In particular to take photos of them.
While I have purchased the LEGO fire station, I haven’t yet put it together. It’s in my backlog queue :). I will update the review after I build.
This Is A Complete Fire Station
I was interested in this set for my LEGO stories because it’s complete. It has everything you could want to play firefighter.
The centerpiece is the station. It has several rooms, a garage for the vehicles and of course a sliding pole. Reviews I found said that the figures can indeed slide down the poles. And it’s a lot of fun to watch them do so. This is one of those neat little tricks LEGO designers pull off from time to time which is why LEGO fans continue to come back for more.
In real life, firefighters rarely fight fires these days. We’ve replaced candles with electric lights. Modern building materials are much more flame retardant. And sprinkler systems contain industrial structure fires.
They are more often to respond to car accidents and other medical events.
But if you have a fire set, you don’t want to play “car wreck” you want to play firefighter.
And of course, you want to imagine your guys going off to fight a big fire.
Thankfully the fire station comes with a command center. Where the fire chief can sit and dispatch the team.
It also comes with beds so that you can roleplay having the crew being asleep when the call comes in to respond to the emergency.
Lets get to the best part.
The vehicles included in the set.
I started looking for LEGO fire sets because I wanted a LEGO firetruck.
This set comes with 3 total vehicles.
The first vehicle is the car for the fire station chief. It’s a simple car but it is red and has lights. I’m not sure how much I would have played with this as a fire chief car. Nor how will I position this in a LEGO diorama.
I think the better use for the car in the long-term will be that it can be re-used to build other cars.
Next is the helicopter. This would be more fun to play with. And as I’m brainstorming, I think this will fit well into a diorama with my other LEGO aircraft. I also need to set a reminder to finish building my LEGO police helicopter.
Finally, the set, of course, comes with a firetruck. It’s a ladder truck. And includes a hose that tucks into the bottom of the ladder trailer. And the trailer also includes small stabilizing legs just like a real ladder truck. This will most likely get the most play.
Because this is LEGO, we want to think about what else we can build with the bricks.
For me, there are some useful building items that intrigue me. If you’re an advanced LEGO builder, these won’t impress you. But I like to have components lying around for quick re-use for my dioramas.
I like the beds. It’s surprising the number of times you want a bed for LEGO play but doesn’t have one. And while it’s not hard to put one together, it’s always good to make sure you have the bricks you need to assemble.
I’m a sucker for the consoles. I always get over-excited when I get a printed console. Because I have dreams of doing MOC spaceships. I don’t know when I’ll do it. But I know I will want consoles. Lots of consoles. And this set comes with a few.
And of course, this is part of the LEGO city theme so it will blend in nicely with your city diorama. Whether this is for kids to play with or if you are building out a LEGO trains diorama.
The fire station is only fun if there are firefighters to live and work in the fire station.
And this set doesn’t disappoint.
There are 2 figures who are wearing air tanks (re-purposed SCUBA) to race into your towering inferno.
There’s the fire captain. And a helicopter pilot.
One of the minifigure heads is female.
And for some reason, they also included a mobile hot dog vendor.
As per my custom I will quote the dimensions from Amazon. “ Fire Station measures over 12” high, 16” wide and 9” deep. Fire truck measures over 3” high, 9” long and 2” wide. Helicopter measures over 3” high, 6” long and 1” wide. Fire chief’s car measures over 1” high, 4” long and 1” wide. Hot dog stand measures over 2” high, 3” wide and 2” deep “ This is a relatively large set. And contains a total of 919 pieces. But I don’t think it will be a complicated build.
All of the reviews I could find were positive on this set. It’s not a collector’s item unless you are looking to build a complete LEGO City set.
But if you have young kids in your life then I think this will be a very fun playset. Because after all who doesn’t like to pretend they’re a firefighter when they’re young?
I believe the price is fair given the number of pieces and vehicles.
Whether you are buying this for a child in your life or (like me) building for your inner child, this is a great set. It has many play possibilities including the station, the truck, and a helicopter. I also think there are many components that can be used to decorate your MOCs.
